Evironmentally Healthy & Green Floor Covering Options

Environmentally sustainable & friendly options for flooring

Leather Flooring

The newest flooring option for your home is Leather flooring. Leather flooring offers the benefits of comfort, style, and distinctive texture with the look of natural leather grains. Leather comes in a variety of colours and patterns, and adds individuality to any home. Leather is available in planks or tiles and is made from 100% recycled leather. Leather flooring is an engineered product, well-suited for installation below grade, over concrete and even over existing floors. Cork backing adds environmental cushioning to leather flooring, eliminating the need for an underlay. It is also an excellent acoustic absorber, making it an excellent choice for boardrooms, screening rooms, libraries, dens and bedrooms.  Leather flooring is also warm to the touch, and is a natural fire retardant.  Leather flooring is easy to repair, even if the leather plank or tile is in the middle of your room, with no power tools, dust or noise. Because the click joint process is reversible, leather flooring can be taken up and reused, which makes it a great option for those who relocate often.

Bamboo Flooring

A renewable 'timber' (technically, bamboo is a grass) that has become a fashionable choice; bamboo is elegant and beautiful to look at, fitting well with many decor themes. It is natural anti-microbial and water-resistant, as well as being extremely durable. Modern bamboo flooring is even available with tongue-and-groove technology so that DIY installation is easy with a simple snap and lock mechanism. While it may be more expensive than laminate, bamboo is less expensive than traditional hardwood flooring and makes a fantastic alternative.  Try to choose bamboo flooring which has been manufactured without formaldehyde resin in its adhesive.

Cork Flooring

With its soft cushioning, wonderful sound- and temperature-insulation and its natural anti-microbial properties, cork is a fantastic choice as a floor covering. It is especially resilient and springs back easily from heavy traffic and weights, such as furniture. It is also one of the most environmentally-friendly choices, as cork derives from the bark of the oak cork tree which can be continually harvested with no harm to the tree and therefore is a truly renewable resource. Its only drawback is its tendency to absorb moisture and therefore, it may not be recommended for high- moisture areas like bathrooms and entry ways.

Carpeting

There are environmentally-friendly carpets made from natural fibers such as wool, jute and coconut husk. It is also possible to have carpet made completely from recycled food and drink containers (used polyethylene terephthalate). Not only is this reusing material that would otherwise be blocking up landfills but it also uses dyeing methods that are less polluting and require less energy..  Most carpets end up in landfill because the adhesives used in their constructions make them difficult to recycle. However, companies are now developing revolutionary backing systems, which do not use glue, thereby making the final processing easier and even prolonging the life of the carpet. Choose a felt underlay as opposed to conventional foam types.  Another option  is to use rubber underlay made from recycled materials.

Hardwood & Laminate Flooring

Wood flooring offers environmentally-friendly covering products that comes from a sustainably-managed forests, with certification. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization which has developed a system for certifying forests around the world that are sustainably-managed and providing a label for products derived from such forests. When choosing a hardwood floor, select one of our FSC certified products. Wood flooring products are also available which are manufactured from wood waste recycling and use VOC & formaldehyde free finishes in compliance with a number of initiatives including CARB 93120 certification to reduce air pollutions & toxic chemicals, as well as the Lacey Act combating illegal forestry practices.
